Summary Glass formation in nature and materials science is reviewed and the recent recognition of polymorphism within the glassy state,
polyamorphism, is discussed. The process by which the glassy state originates during the continuous cooling or viscous slowdown
process, is examined and the three canonical characteristics of relaxing liquids are correlated through the fragility. The
conversion of strong liquids to fragile liquids by pressure-induced coordination number increases is discussed, and then it
is shown that for the same type of system it is possible to have the same conversion accomplished via a first-order transition
within the liquid state. The systems in which this can happen are of the same type which exhibit polyamorphism, and the whole
phenomenology can be accounted for by a recent simple modification of the van der Waals model for tetrahedrally bonded liquids.
The concept of complex amorphous systems which can lose a significant number of degrees of freedom through weak first-order
transitions is then used to discuss the relation between native and denatured hydrated proteins, since the latter have much
in common with plasticized chain polymer systems. Finally, we close the circle by taking a short-time-scale phenomenon given
much attention by protein physicists, viz., the onset of an anomaly in the Debye-Waller factor with increasing temperature, and showing that for a wide variety of liquids,
including computer-simulated strong and fragile ionic liquids, this phenomenon is closely correlated with the experimental
glass transition temperature. This implies that the latter owes its origin to the onset of strong anharmonicity in certain
components of the vibrational density of states (evidently related to the boson peak) which then permits the system to gain
access to its configurational degrees of freedom. The more anharmonic these vibrational components, the closer to the Kauzmann
temperature will commence the exploration of configuration space and, for a given configurational microstate degeneracy, the
more fragile the liquid will be.

Heavy ion irradiation in the electronic stopping power region induces macroscopic dimensional change in metallic glasses and introduces magnetic anisotropy in some magnetic materials. The present work is on the irradiation study of ferromagnetic metallic glasses, where both dimensional change and modification of magnetic anisotropy are expected. Magnetic anisotropy was measured using Mössbauer spectroscopy of virgin and irradiated Fe40Ni40B20 and Fe40Ni38Mo4B18 metallic glass ribbons. 90 MeV 127I beam was used for the irradiations. Irradiation doses were 5×1013 and 7.5×1013 ions/cm2. The relative intensity ratios D 23 of the second and third lines of the Mössbauer spectra were measured to determine the magnetic anisotropy. The virgin samples of both the materials display in-plane magnetic anisotropy, i.e., the spins are oriented parallel to the ribbon plane. Irradiation is found to cause reduction in magnetic anisotropy. Near-complete randomization of magnetic moments is observed at high irradiation doses. Correlation is found between the residual stresses introduced by ion irradiation and the change in magnetic anisotropy. 相似文献

The model considered is a d=2 disordered Ising system on a square lattice with nearest neighbor interaction. The disorder is induced by layers (rows) of spins, randomly located, which are frozen in an antiferromagnetic order. It is assumed that all the vertical couplings take the same positive value J
v, while all the horizontal couplings take the same positive value J
h. The model can be exactly solved and the free energy is given as a simple explicit expression. The zero-temperature entropy can be positive because of the frustration due to the competition between antiferromagnetic alignment induced by the quenched layers and ferromagnetic alignment due to the positive couplings. No phase transition is found at finite temperature if the layers of frozen spins are independently distributed, while for correlated disorder one finds a low-temperature phase with some glassy properties. 相似文献

,Static and dynamic properties of the Potts model on the simple cubic lattice with nearest neighbor -interaction are obtained from Monte Carlo simulations in a temperature range where full thermal equilibrium still can be
achieved (). For a lattice size L
= 16, in this range finite size effects are still negligible, but the data for the spin glass susceptibility agree with previous
extrapolations based on finite size scaling of very small lattices. While the static properties are compatible with a zero
temperature transition, they certainly do not prove it. Unlike the Ising spin glass, the decay of the time-dependent order
parameter is compatible with a simple Kohlrausch function, , while a power law prefactor cannot be distinguished. The Kohlrausch exponent y
(
T
) decreases from at [0pt] to at [0pt] however. The relaxation time is compatible with the exponential divergence postulated by McMillan for spin glasses at their lower critical dimension,
but the exponent that can be extracted still differs significantly from the theoretical value, . Thus the present results support the conclusion that the Potts spin glass in d
= 3 dimensions differs qualitatively from the Ising spin glass.

The dynamics of the one-dimensional spin glass with asymmetric interactions between neighboring spins is considered. We confine ourselves to discrete couplings with values ±J. We show that the algebraic decay of the remanent magnetization of the infinite ±J-spin chain at zero temperature is only valid for symmetric couplings. Our analytical investigations as well as computer simulations show stretched exponential decay for any finite concentration of antisymmetric bonds. Thus, the asymmetric ±J-spin chain shows an asymmetry-induced phase transition at zero temperature. 相似文献

We revealed the changes in the γ-luminescence spectra under the influence of a thermal radiation field on high-purity alkali-silicate
glasses (I) and those with addition of Fe3+ ions (II). We explain the obtained results within the framework of the L-model of edge absorption and electron-hole recombination
processes.
